Lottery scams are common these days. Anyone who opens their bulk E-mail often will see hundreds of letters telling them that they have won some form of a lottery.
These E-mails are scams, yet the wording of the letters can lead people to believe they have won actual money. The scam is spreading, and police have been on the lookout for anyone involved in the scams.
Spanish police on Thursday, arrested eighty seven Nigerians, whom they feel took part in one of these lottery scams. The scam supposedly has taken millions of dollars from Europeans and Americans.
The scam, while not sending out millions of letters, sent enough to make themselves a lot of money. "As they sent an average of 15,000 letters every day, only 20 or 30 people had to fall into the trap for their earnings to be very high," a source told the El Pais newspaper.
The scam revolved around sending these letters out, which stated that the person had won $4.8 million in the Spanish lottery. The only catch was these people had to pay official costs in order for the money to be released.
The problem for police is not many have come forward to tell they have been scammed. Many people, according to the police, were too embarrassed to admit they were duped.
