The Big Game dates back to 1996, when it went on sale in six states. The last state to join Mega Millions is California, who stepped in nearly two years ago.
The game is played by purchasing a ticket for one dollar each, in which a player chooses five numbers from 1 to 56 and one extra number from 1 to 46 (the Mega Ball). Mega Millions rules state that tickets can be sold up to 15 minutes before each drawing.
To win the jackpot, a ticket holder must match all five numbers and the Mega Ball. A $250,000 prize can be won by matching all five numbers minus the Mega Ball. A number of lesser prizes are also available for various number matches.
